CLUB HISTORY:

In August 2005 Volkswagen South Africa purchased struggling KwaZulu-Natal based National First Division outfit Maritzburg United. In November 2005 the franchise relocated to Port Elizabeth. The club is renamed Bay United.

In 2006, in order to strengthen the capacity base of the club, Volkswagen also purchases the University of Port Elizabeth School of Excellence, a soccer development facility.

2006/07  13th in the Mvela Golden League.

2007/08  Runner-up to Maritzburg United in the Coastal Stream of the NFD and qualify for the NFD Promotional Playoffs. Beat Black Leopards 2 – 1 on aggregate in the semi-finals and then beat FC AK 2 - 1 in the final of Promotional Playoffs to be promoted to ABSA Premiership.

2008/09  16th in the ABSA Premiership and relegated back to the NFD.

2009/10  3rd in the Coastal Stream of the NFD. The club owners sold the club franchise to a Limpopo based business woman, Ms. Julia Lerato Mogaladi.

2010/11  Winners of the Coastal Stream of the NFD ahead of Thanda Royal Zulu. Lost 0 – 0 (4 – 5Pen) to Jomo Cosmos in the NFD Playoff Final. Beat Thanda Royal Zulu 4 – 1 in the semi-final of the Promotional Playoffs, but lost to 0 – 2 to Black Leopards in the final of the NFD Promotional Playoffs.

2011/12  11th in the new single stream NFD. Bay United relocated to Polokwane.

2012/13  The club changed  its name from Bay United Football Club to Polokwane City Football Club with effect from the 01st of August 2012. Winners of the NFD title and gain promotion to the ABSA Premiership. A tough season for Polokwane after losing 4 players in a motor vehicle accident on 11 November 2012. Lost 0 – 2 to Kaizer Chiefs in the 2nd round of the Nedbank Cup.

2013/14  15th in the ABSA Premiership. Finished top of the mini log in the Promotional Playoffs over Black Leopards and Milano United to retain their place in the Premier League. Lost 1 – 3 to Kaizer Chiefs in Round one of the Telkom KO. Lost 0 – 1 to Golden Arrows in Round one of the Nedbank Cup.

2014/15  12th in the ABSA Premiership. Lost 1 – 2 to Orlando Pirates in Round one of the Telkom KO. Lost 1 – 4 to Supersport United in Round one of the Nedbank Cup.

2015/16  13th in the ABSA Premiership. Lost 1 – 2 to Supersport United in Round one of the Telkom KO. Beat African All Stars 2 – 0 in Round one of the Nedbank Cup, beat Platinum Stars 2 – 1 AET in Round two before losing 0 – 2 to Baroka FC in the Quarterfinals.

2016/17  6th in the ABSA Premiership. Lost 0 – 2 to Mamelodi Sundowns in Round one of the Telkom KO. Beat African All Stars 3 – 1 in Round one of the Nedbank Cup, before losing 0 – 2 to Chippa United in Round two.

2017/18  13th in the ABSA Premiership. Lost 0 – 1 to CT City in Round one of the MTN8. Beat Ajax CT on penalties in Round one of the Telkom KO, beat Orlando Pirates on penalties in Round two, before losing to Bloemfontein Celtic on penalties in the Semi-finals. Lost 2 – 3 to Ubuntu FC CT in Round one of the Nedbank Cup.

2018/19  5th in the ABSA Premiership. Lost to Supersport United on penalties in Round one of the Telkom KO. Lost 1 – 2 to TTM FC in Round one of the Nedbank Cup.

2019/20  16th in the ABSA Premiership and relegated to the GladAfrica Championship. Beat CT City 2 – 0 in Round one of the MTN8 before losing to Highlands Park on penalties in the Semi-finals. Lost 0 – 1 to Golden Arrows in Round one of the Telkom KO. Lost 0 – 1 to Baroka FC in Round one of the Nedbank Cup.

2020/21  13th in the GladAfrica Championship. Lost 1 – 2 to TS Sporting in the preliminary round of the Nedbank Cup.

2021/22  6th in the GladAfrica Championship. Lost to Richards Bay FC on penalties in the preliminary round of the Nedbank Cup.

2022/23  Winners of the MFC and promoted to the DSTV Premiership. Beat Black Leopards 1 – 0 in the preliminary round of the Nedbank Cup, before losing 1 – 1 (1 – 3 Pen) to Chippa United in Round one.
