BAROKA FC vs BLACK LEOPARDS
The third of six matches in the Promotional Playoffs will be played at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday 8th June 2017 at 15h00 and pitch 15th placed PSL side Baroka FC up against 2nd placed NFD side Black Leopards in a Limpopo derby. It will be the second match for both sides who have each drawn against Cape side Stellenbosch FC.
The teams have met 7 times since their initial meeting in the 2010/11 season, with Baroka having never beaten their provincial rivals. The two teams played to goalless draws both home and away when they last met – during the 2015/16 season. Stellenbosch FC lead the 3 team playoff log with two draws while the two Limpopo sides have a draw apiece.
Only formed in 2007, Baroka have flattered their short history with some remarkable results. Winners of 2010/11 SAFA Division 2, Baroka also beat Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup that season before losing to Black Leopards on penalties in the semi-finals. Baroka finished behind Sivutsa Stars (now Royal Eagles) in the Inland Stream of the SAFA Playoffs. Baroka won the SAFA 2nd division title in the 2011/12 season and again in 2012/13. This time they won the SAFA Playoffs and were promoted to the NFD. After finishing 4th in the debut season and 9th in 2014/15, Baroka won the NFD title in the 2015/16 and were promoted to the PSL. They also beat three PSL sides (Chippa United, Golden Arrows and Polokwane City) in the Nedbank Cup on the way to a semifinal loss to Supersport United. Their 15th place finish means that they will compete against Stellenbosch FC and provincial rivals Black Leopards for their place in the top flight.
Winners of the Inland Stream of the NFD in 2000/01, Lidoda Duvha were promoted to the PSL. After seven seasons in the top flight, Leopards finished 15th in the 2007/08 season, lost to Bay United (now Polokwane City) in the Playoffs and were again relegated to the NFD. Two seasons later, Leopards won the Inland stream of the NFD, lost to Vasco da Gama in the playoff final, beat African Warriors in the semifinals of the Playoffs but lost on penalties to Aces in the final to remain in the NFD. The very next season Leopards finished behind Jomo Cosmos in the Inland Stream of the NFD to again make the Playoffs. After beating Vasco da Gama (now Stellenbosch FC) in the semifinals they again met Bay United in the final, and this time Leopards were victorious, and were back in the PSL. Unfortunately their second stay in the PSL was shorter than their first and having finished 16th and last in the 2012/13 were once again relegated to the NFD where they have been since. Leopards finished 2nd in the NFD in 2013/14, but finished 2nd to Polokwane City in the Playoffs to stay in the NFD.
