NFD NEDBANK CUP PREVIEW - Round of 16

JOMO COSMOS v BIDVEST WITS

Since 1985, Cosmos and Wits have met 55 times with Cosmos winning 18 to the 17 wins for Wits. The teams have met only once in the Nedbank Cup and that was back in the 1996/97 season when the competition was known as the Bobsave Superbowl. A Christopher Dube goal separated the two sides. Cosmos went on to lose 0 – 1 in the final to Orlando Pirates. Bidvest Wits have won this competition twice and been runner up twice as well. Their first success came in the 1978 final where they beat Kaizer Chiefs 3 – 2 in the then Mainstay Cup. The second win came 32 years later when Wits beat Amazulu 3 -0 in the 2010 Nedbank Cup final. The student side were also runner up in 2005 (to Supersport Utd) and in 2014, losing to Pirates in the final.

Cosmos beat Amazulu 1 – 0 to win their only title in the 1990 competition. They did however play another 4 times in the final, losing on each occasion. 1986 to Sundowns, 1991 to Swallows, 1992 to Chiefs and 1996 to Pirates.

The last time these two teams met was last season in the PSL, where Wits won both home and away.

BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC v MBOMBELA UNITED FC

Bloemfontein Celtic’s only win in this competition came all the way back in the 1985 Mainstay Cup where they beat African Wanderers 2 – 1 after extra time. That was also the only final appearance for the Free State side.

Mbombela progressed to the round of 16 last year after beating Sibanye golden Stars in round 1, only to lose to Sundowns in the round of 16. Celtic lost to Wits in round 1. This will be the first ever meeting between these two sides.
