NFD 2017/18 - WEEK 14 WRAP

CT ALL STARS 1 UNIVERSITY of PRETORIA 2

Tuks kept in touch with logleaders Highlands after posting just their second away win of the season on Friday in Cape Town.  As was the case last season, Setelele scored for the home side, but that was only after Moseki and Bruchhausen had contributed for Tuks. The goal for Moseki is his 6th of the season and he joins Liphoko of Mbombela, Phewa of Real Kings and Modibedi Mokoena from Super Eagles as the leading goal scorers of the current season. All Stars drop two places to 10th.

SUPER EAGLES 1 RICHARDS BAY 0

NFD rookies Super Eagles sent Richards Bay to the bottom of the NFD log after posting their 1st win in 3 weeks on Saturday. The win for the 12th placed Free State side gives them a 6 point gap back to the relegation zone. Modibedi Mokoena poached his 6th goal of the season to join 3 others as the leading scorers this season. The former Thanda Royal Zulu have not won in 9 outings and have failed to score in their last 5 matches. Added to that the KZN side have not won on the road this season. This was the first meeting between the two sides.

REAL KINGS 5 TSHAKHUMA TSHA MADZIHANDILA 1

Real Kings bounced back to winning ways in spectacular fashion after their KZN derby defeat against Uthongathi last week, when they crushed TTM FC 5 – 1 on Saturday. Phewa joined 3 other players as the leading goal scorer after his hattrick, while Bhengu moved up to 4 goals with his brace for the home side. The loss comes as a serious blow for TTM FC after beating Tuks last weekend in Pretoria with the 5 – 1 scoreline their biggest margin of defeat all season. The score also replicates the beating Kings gave the then Milano United last season. Stoffels scored the consolation goal for TTM FC

STELLENBOSCH FC 0 MBOMBELA UNITED FC 0

Old habits die hard and Stellenbosch went back to not winning matches or scoring goals on Saturday. The Cape side have won 1 match in their last 8 with 5 draws and 2 losses and have only scored 3 goals in two months. The point for Mbombela keeps the Mpumalanga side 1 place and 1 point above Stellenbosch FC in 4th place on the log, six points behind logleaders Highlands Park.

BLACK LEOPARDS 0 WITBANK SPURS 0

Two wins and two draws is the record for new Leopards coach Minnaert after their stalemate with Spurs on Saturday. The draw leaves the Limpopo side in 9th on the log and with some concern after only winning once in 6 home matches this season so far. The point for the Witbank side leaves Spurs unbeaten in 7 matches with their last five outings now all being draws. It is only the 2nd time in 20 meetings that he two teams have played to a draw.

MTHATHA BUCKS 1 HIGHLANDS PARK 3

Any hopes of a return to winning ways for Mthatha Bucks and new coach Duncan Lechesa were dashed by logleaders Highlands who eclipsed the home side with goals from Mbatha, Shalulile and Mvala. The visitors re-established their 4 point lead over the chasing pack in the process. Khumalo bagged his first goal for the home side, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Bucks from sliding down to their worst position all season – 13th. The Eastern Cape side have not won in their last 6 matches, losing 5 and drawing 1, while Highlands improve their unbeaten run to 9 outings. They have been on top of the log for the last 7 weeks, the most for any team this season.

UBUNTU CT FC 1 UTHONGATHI FC 1

The draw for home side Ubuntu saw the Cape side escape from the bottom of the log for the first time in 9 weeks. They are level on 10 points, but ahead of the former Thanda on goal difference in the relegation zone. The home side had to come from behind for the point too, with Isaacs cancelling out the Sibisi goal for the visitors. The ABC Motsepe League champions, Uthongathi have still not won on the road yet this season. This was the first meeting between the two sides.

JOMO COSMOS 2 ROYAL EAGLES 1

Cosmos got back to winning ways on Sunday and back into 2nd place on the log ahead of Tuks on goal difference. The home side were made to fight hard against the KZN who have just re-appointed Kostadin Papic as their coach. Macuphu scored first for Cosmos with Zulu providing the equalizer for Eagles. The visitors were left frustrated however as Mntambo snatched his 5th of the season and with it the 3 points that keep Cosmos unbeaten at home. Cosmos are now unbeaten in their last 7 outings in which they have scored 16 goals, while their opponent have not won in 7 matches and have still yet to keep a clean sheet this whole season.
